Elyce O’Neill

Provisional Psychologist

My name is Elyce, and I am a Provisional Psychologist student placement working with Wakai Waian Healing.

I was born in Windsor, NSW, where much of my family maintains strong and enduring connections. Although I was raised primarily in Bellingen, NSW, my relationship to place has been shaped in different ways, through family ties in Windsor, and through the environment and community of Bellingen. Growing up in a community with a strong Aboriginal presence, I was exposed early to cultural learning, ceremony, and storytelling through school and community engagement. These experiences shaped my appreciation for the power of story, empathy, and connection, and continue to influence how I understand people and their experiences.

I later moved to the Gold Coast where I completed my Bachelor of Psychology with Honours at Griffith University. Throughout my studies, I was drawn to roles that let me work closely with people, supporting them during meaningful moments of change and personal growth, including crisis support, adventure-based therapeutic work and mentorship with youth from complex backgrounds. These experiences deepened my interest and commitment to trauma-informed and culturally informed practice, particularly approaches that centre on the individual, their values, and lived experience.

In my work, I aim to offer flexible, person-centred support that adapts to each individual rather than applying one-size-fits-all models. At this stage of my training, I am most familiar with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and I am drawn to its values-based focus and emphasis on psychological flexibility and meaningful living. I remain open to learning across a range of therapeutic approaches to best meet the needs of the people I work with.

I was drawn to Wakai Waian Healing because of its strong cultural foundations, holistic approach to wellbeing, and commitment to working respectfully with individuals, families, and communities. I am grateful to be developing my practice within a culturally grounded organisation and look forward to learning from those around me while supporting people in ways that are ethical, respectful, and meaningful.

I am based in Rockhampton, where I practice under supervision as part of my ongoing professional development.
