Welcoming Keely Steel – Investing in the Next Generation

We are proud to welcome Keely, our first La Trobe University placement student, to Wakai Waian Healing.

This marks an important milestone for our organisation and reflects our growing commitment to supporting the next generation of clinicians.

Keely joins us as a Provisional Psychologist currently completing the final stage of her postgraduate training. Originally from Bendigo, Victoria, her early years spent on farmland and bushland shaped her appreciation for place, wellbeing and connection. Now based on the Sunshine Coast, she brings both life experience and professional dedication to this next chapter of her journey.

Her pathway into psychology began after working in a psychology clinic in an administrative role, where she witnessed firsthand the impact of therapeutic work. That experience sparked a decision to return to university and pursue psychology professionally. She completed her undergraduate studies through the University of New England, Honours at Monash University, and is now finishing her Master’s degree at La Trobe University.

Keely’s clinical interests include working with adolescents and young adults, with a strong interest in women’s mental health and supporting individuals through key life transitions. She values creating safe, supportive spaces and is developing her skills in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, trauma-informed practice and EMDR.

Her placement represents more than an individual training opportunity.

It reflects Wakai Waian Healing’s commitment to building sustainable workforce pathways and strengthening the future of culturally responsive care. By partnering with universities and supporting provisional psychologists through supervised placements, we are investing in the long-term development of practitioners who understand holistic, relational and community-informed approaches to wellbeing.

Strong services are built not only by those leading today, but by those learning, training and growing within them.

Welcoming Keely is part of our broader commitment to mentorship, supervision and creating meaningful training environments that prepare clinicians to serve communities with humility, integrity and cultural respect.

We look forward to supporting Keely as she completes her training and continues her professional journey with us.
