Imesha Vitanege

Provisional Psychologist

Originally from Melbourne, I recently relocated to Rockhampton to complete my psychology placement with Wakai Waian Healing.

Working alongside First Nations communities has always been something I hoped to do. As someone who migrated to Australia as a child from Sri Lanka, I have grown up understanding how the impacts of colonisation can affect communities across generations. Learning about Australia’s history deepened my desire to contribute in a meaningful way and to support healing through culturally respectful mental health care.

Before beginning my psychology journey, I volunteered with the Centre for Multicultural Youth, supporting newly arrived young people as they found their confidence and voice in a new country. I also volunteered with Headspace as a Youth Advisory Group member before working as a Peer Worker with Orygen Youth Mental Health, where I supported young people experiencing complex mental health challenges.

These experiences reinforced my passion for youth mental health. Adolescence is such an important stage of life, and I believe every young person deserves to feel heard, understood and supported without judgement. I enjoy creating a safe, welcoming space where people can speak openly about what they’re experiencing and know that someone is genuinely listening.

Joining Wakai Waian Healing allows me to combine my passion for psychology with my commitment to culturally safe practice. I feel privileged to be learning from such an experienced and supportive team, and I look forward to continuing to grow while helping young people and families strengthen their wellbeing.
