Celebrating Elaine Samways – Becoming a Board-Approved Psychology Supervisor at Wakai Waian Healing

Wakai Waian Healing is proud to celebrate Elaine on her recent approval as a Board Approved Supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia.

This is a significant professional milestone and a well-deserved recognition of Elaine’s depth of experience, integrity and commitment to high-quality, ethical psychological practice.

Becoming an approved supervisor means Elaine is now formally recognised as someone who can guide and assess provisional psychologists on their pathway to independent practice. Supervisors play a crucial role in the profession. They help shape the next generation of psychologists, ensuring they are safe, competent and grounded in strong ethical practice.

Elaine brings warmth, wisdom and breadth of experience to this role.

Born in Oxford and raised in rural Oxfordshire, Elaine developed a deep connection to nature from an early age. She has lived and worked across Wurundjeri Country, Quandamooka Country and Batjala Country, and now lives and works on Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara Country on the Sunshine Coast, where she is raising her family.

Across her career, Elaine has worked in forensic, disability and mental health settings. She supports adolescents, adults and older adults in the areas of mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, addictions and adjustment difficulties. Her therapeutic approach is holistic and integrative, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, expressive therapies, systemic principles and trauma-informed modalities, including EMDR.

Elaine has also undertaken important work in the Torres Strait through Wakai Waian Healing, supporting communities with culturally responsive, trauma-informed care. Her ability to sit with complex trauma in a calm and steady way has made a strong impact both in remote communities and on the Sunshine Coast.

CEO Ed Mosby said the achievement reflects both Elaine’s professional standing and her commitment to the community.

“Elaine’s approval as a supervisor is a testament to the depth of experience and care she brings to her work. She specialises in trauma-informed therapies including EMDR and has done meaningful work in the Torres Strait. Having someone of her calibre supporting the next generation of psychologists strengthens not only our organisation but the profession more broadly.”

Ros Mann, Workforce Sustainability Lead, said the approval is also a critical step forward for building long-term capacity.

“From a workforce sustainability perspective, this is exactly what we want to see. Having experienced clinicians like Elaine approved as supervisors means we can mentor and grow our provisional psychologists within a supportive, culturally grounded environment. It strengthens our pipeline and ensures quality, continuity and stability in our services.”

Elaine’s approval allows Wakai Waian Healing to take on more provisional psychologists and support them through structured supervision. More importantly, it ensures that emerging psychologists are mentored by someone who brings compassion, cultural awareness and strong clinical grounding to the role.

This is a wonderful and well-earned achievement.

Congratulations Elaine.
