Wakai Waian Healing Thursday Island Office

This position will be located in our Wakai Waian Healing Thursday Island Office which is located at 40 Douglas Street, Thursday Island, in the Torres Strait. This position’s hours of work will be 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

At this site employees are provided with dedicated lunch and tea rooms, administration support employees, all office facilities, counselling and therapy rooms, Computers and Office equipment provided, internet and office supplies.

This position is co-located with other programs and Psychology and Counselling services as provided by Wakai Waian Healing for the Torres Strait Region.

Specific training will be provided to enable you to successfully complete your expected tasks within your position. Training will be provided in various methods i.e. in person and zoom.

Role Purpose

This position reports to the Team Leader at the Thursday Island WWH office. The purpose of this position is to provide general administrative support to WWH team who will be focused on the delivery of Social and Emotional Wellbeing/Mental Health and National Disability Insurance Services (NDIS) to hard to reach population groups in the Torres Strait Region.

Position Expected Tasks

Successful applicants will be expected to undertake the following tasks;

  1. Work within a multi-disciplinary team environment at WWH;
  1. Perform front reception duties and conduct administration tasks in support of Office functioning;
  1. Within scope of profession, support the co-ordination and delivery of Psychology, Counselling and Mental Health Worker clinic’s at the WWH Office;
  1. Undertake daily administration tasks in support of WWH programs;
  1. Support employees with collection and input of data for funding body reporting requirements;
  1. Provide support to other WWH employees with service specific resource development;
  1. Provide administrative support to financial and budget management requirements;
  1. Undertake own professional development, mentoring, supervision and self-care;
  1. Support other WWH employees to develop links and collaborate in partnership with a range of stakeholders including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisations, Government and non-Government services, community members and mainstream services;
  1. Contributing to effective evaluation activities, program specification and contract development, reporting and compliance functions, stakeholder engagement, and performance management as required by WWH;
  1. Relevant to the position, participate in the ongoing education, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of safety and quality initiatives relevant to The National Standards for Mental Health Services and the ISO 9001:2015 Standards.
  1. Represent WWH, or provide support to other WWH employees as required in networking, promotion and education activities; and community/service engagement activities;
  1. Other duties as required and negotiated.

The successful applicant is expected to possess the following skills;

  1. Ability to effectively use a variety of technologies including, mobile phones, computers, computer based programs, and internet Applications; and
  1. Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  1. Ability to support access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for people with disability arising from mental illness, or willingness to participate in training to develop these skills;

  1. Demonstrated ability, or the ability to rapidly acquire the knowledge experience with working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in rural, remote and regional areas;
  1. Demonstrated ability, or the ability to rapidly acquire the knowledge to use office technologies i.e., Computers, printers, faxes, phones, photocopiers, videoconferencing facilities; and
  • Demonstrated ability, or the ability to rapidly acquire the knowledge to use Windows programs such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoints.

  • In collaboration with other WWH employees, prepare written documentation including reports, presentations, speeches, publications and correspondence for consideration by the larger organisation;

  • Productively and effectively participate in the performance of WWH specific programs;

  1. Appointment to this position requires proof of qualifications to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of duty;

  1. At WWH all roles will require, or an ability to acquire, a Blue Card and an NDIS Disability Screening Card;

  1. Employees who are permanently appointed to WWH are required to undertake a period of probation appropriate to the appointment;
  1. Candidates must complete NDIS Worker’s Orientation Module Certificate and New Worker’s NDIS Induction Module Certificate as part of induction
  1. Candidates must provide certified copies of requested proof of identity documents for the purposes of general Criminal history and National Police Certificate checks;
