Empowering Well-being in the Torres Strait

At Wakai Waian Healing, we are dedicated to enhancing the social and emotional well-being of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples. Focusing on psychology and counselling services, we aim to bridge the gap in mental health support for remote and rural communities across Australia.

Our Commitment

With funding from the North Queensland Primary Health Network, we proudly serve the community from our 40 Douglas St, Thursday Island office. Our mission is to provide culturally respectful and effective mental health services tailored to your needs.

Services Offered

We understand that everyone’s journey is unique. That’s why we offer a variety of services, including:

  • Individual and Group Sessions: Accessible in community settings or the comfort of your home.
  • Telehealth Services: For your convenience, connect us via telephone, Skype, or other videoconferencing platforms, Flexible Hours: While we operate during standard business hours, we offer flexibility to meet your needs outside these times.
  • NDIS: We are registered with NDIS and service consumers across the Torres Strait.

Outer Island Services

Wakai Waian Healing is excited to expand our reach to the outer island regions of the Torres Strait. This expansion is designed to support even more community members, making sure no one is left behind. Stay tuned for more details on these critical services.

Meet Our Team

At Wakai Waian Healing, we believe in the power of community. Our staff includes local Mental Health Worker Trainees, supplemented by experienced psychologists and counsellors who fly in to provide expert support. We are proud to offer a diverse team including male and female workers and those identifying as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Non-Aboriginal.

Who Can Access Our Services?

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Residents of the Torres Strait, including outer island regions.
  • Individuals aged between 12 and 70 experiencing low to moderate emotional or mental health distress.

Non-Eligibility Criteria:

  • Individuals with acute mental health needs or under the care of public mental health services.
  • Those involved in workers’ compensation or motor vehicle compensation proceedings.

Cost of Services

Our services are completely free and funded for eligible clients. Fees may apply if you still need to meet the eligibility criteria but wish to access our services.

Making a Referral:

We welcome referrals from community service providers, general practitioners, and self-referrals. You can easily send a referral to our Intake Services via:
