Jamie-Lee Schmiedel

General Psychologist

I was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and moved to Australia when I was just 10 years old. After a brief stint in Brisbane, my family settled in Townsville, where I’ve spent most of my life, although I’ve ventured to places like Brisbane and Darwin for work opportunities.

My academic journey began at James Cook University in Townsville, where I discovered my deep interest in understanding people and the complexities of their thoughts and emotions. My inspiration to pursue psychology stems mainly from my mum, who has dedicated her career to the disability sector. Growing up around individuals who needed support profoundly shaped my desire to help others.

Driven by my passion, I completed a Master’s Degree in Professional Psychology and later returned to further my education with a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Psychology. This additional qualification allows me to register as a clinical psychologist, a goal I am actively working towards over the next few years.

Joining Wakai Waian Healing is particularly meaningful to me. I have a strong connection with First Nations communities and believe that they deserve more support and representation in mental health services. Working with an Indigenous-owned organisation aligns perfectly with my values and aspirations.

In my practice, I am incredibly passionate about helping teenagers and adults who have experienced trauma, whether from childhood or specific incidents. I aim to specialise in trauma-informed care, including techniques like EMDR, to support individuals’ healing journeys. My ultimate goal is to provide a safe space for people to explore their challenges and discover what works for them to overcome their difficulties. I’m excited to bring my skills and dedication to Wakai Waian Healing, where I can contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities.
