John Sheppard

General Psychologist

I am a registered psychologist with over five decades of experience across a broad range of practice settings. I was born on Turrbal country in Brisbane in 1950 and completed my psychology training at the University of Queensland in 1971, supported by Commonwealth scholarships.

My early career focused on vocational and organisational psychology, including roles with the Department of Labour and Industry, private industry, and the Air Force Psychology Service. This work involved psychological assessment, workforce suitability evaluations, and research into job satisfaction and performance across diverse sectors.

Over time, my practice expanded into clinical and community settings. I have worked in hospitals, correctional environments, and community services, including four years with an Aboriginal Medical Service in Wagga Wagga. My experience includes working with individuals across the lifespan and supporting people with complex and diverse needs.

I would describe my approach as generalist, informed by a wide breadth of professional experience. I am particularly interested in service delivery models that are responsive to community context and grounded in practical outcomes.

I joined Wakai Waian Healing to contribute to a service that is culturally informed, community-focused, and committed to improving access to psychological support across regional and remote Queensland. I am currently based in Central Queensland, providing services across Rockhampton and surrounding communities.
