Rebecca Masterton

Provisional Psychologist

My name is Rebecca Masterton, and I am a provisional psychologist. I am a Gubbi Gubbi and Wakka Wakka woman from the Sunshine Coast region, with strong cultural and family connections, including my nana, Lois Gulash, a respected Elder from Cherbourg and a member of the Stolen Generation.

My interest in psychology developed from both personal and professional experiences. Prior to entering the field, I worked in people-focused roles, including hairdressing, where I developed strong interpersonal and listening skills. These early experiences shaped my understanding of the importance of communication, connection and trust in supporting others.

Following personal challenges, particularly as a parent navigating complex legal and emotional circumstances, I made the decision to formally study psychology. These experiences highlighted gaps in support and informed my commitment to working with individuals who may feel misunderstood or unsupported within existing systems.

I have since completed a Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) and a Master of Professional Psychology, alongside a Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice. I have contributed to a range of support services, including crisis support roles, community-based organisations, and behaviour support within the NDIS. My experience spans working with children, adults, and older adults across diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, individuals impacted by trauma, domestic and family violence, disability, and alcohol and other drug use. I bring a client-centred approach, with a focus on empathy, active listening, cultural safety, and supporting individuals to navigate life challenges in a safe and respectful way.

I joined Wakai Waian Healing after first engaging with Ed Mosby, and the organisation several years ago. The service model and values strongly aligned with my own, particularly the focus on culturally safe, community-led care. I am currently based on the Sunshine Coast, working across both the Sunshine Coast and Central Queensland as part of my provisional psychology pathway.
