Over the past four years, we have evolved into a dynamic multisite organisation, offering:
The name ‘Wakai Waian Healing’ is not just a title but a profound reflection of our deep cultural roots. It was bestowed upon our founder, Edward, by his family in the traditional language of the Masigalgal people (Kalaw Lagaw Ya). In this language, there are no direct translations for ‘Psychologist’ or ‘Counsellor.’ Instead, ‘Wakai Waian’ translates to ‘straightening yarn’—a powerful symbol of the guidance we provide and receive throughout life’s journey, from youth into adulthood.
The emblem of Wakai Waian Healing draws inspiration from the work of Steve Mam, McRose Elu, Ivy Trevallion, and Allen Reid in their influential article “The Coconut Palm Tree: A Metaphor for Island Family Life” (Family Matters, No. 35, August 1993). In their work, the coconut palm represents the essence of Torres Strait Island family life, where the roots signify Heritage, the trunk embodies Tradition, and the leaves and maturing coconuts symbolize Culture.
For Wakai Waian Healing, the fallen coconut signifies the emergence of a new generation—an offspring that carries forward the legacy of Tradition, customs, Culture, and practices. The coconut is a vital resource for nutrition, medicine, shelter, and ceremony across many cultures and a powerful symbol of resilience and continuity. At Wakai Waian Healing, we are more than just a service provider. We are your partner in the journey of healing, growth, and cultural connection. Our deep commitment to supporting individuals and communities in navigating their paths toward wellness and empowerment is unwavering. We invite you to join us on this meaningful journey.
Wakai Waian Healing acknowledges the Elders and Traditional Owners in those regions where our staff operate. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s unique lived experiences, cultures, countries, nations, customs, and traditions.
Wakai Waian Healing is a 100% Indigenous Owned Organisation registered with Supply Nation.
